What did Shila Iqbal tweet and why was she sacked from Emmerdale?

Shila Iqbal has been axed from Emmerdale after the discovery of a series of offensive posts that she had made on social media.

The actress plays Aiesha Richards on the soap and had recently been promoted to regular character after making her first appearance last year.

Shila has only started making frequent appearances over the last few weeks, ever since the hour long episode towards the end of March.

Its not yet known whether the scenes that has already filmed will still be included in future episodes or if they will be removed.

Why was Shila Iqbal sacked from Emmerdale?

Shila has been removed from the show after Emmerdale bosses were made aware of racist tweets that she had posted in 2013 according to a Mail Online report.

The social media posts, which she made when she was 19, are alleged to have included the n word.

The actress has acknowledged the offensive nature of the tweets, saying in a statement: I am terribly sorry and take full responsibility for my use of such inappropriate language.

I, like everyone else, have a responsibility about the language I have used on social media as well as in conversation.

She also confirmed that she had received hateful tweets herself since joining Emmerdale, with people saying that as a Muslim her role in the soap meant that she was committing sinful acts.

The exact content of her tweets which led to her being axed are unknown and she has since deleted her Twitter account.

An Emmerdale spokesperson told us: As a consequence of historic social media posts Shila Iqbal has left her role as Aiesha Richards on Emmerdale.
