The 2020 awards season just got a little more congested. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts today announced that its 2020 film awards will be held on Sunday 2 February. As anticipated, this keeps BAFTA ahead of the Oscars, which are moving to February 9 that year, but only by one week.
BAFTA had previously said it would consult within the industry about a new 2020 date for its film ceremony but reiterated its desire to remain ahead of the Academy Awards, which it has been since 2001. The 2019 BAFTA film awards take place on Sunday 10 February, two weeks before the Oscars on 24 February.
The new 2020 Oscar date in theory puts the ceremony on a collision course with the Berlin Film Festival, which traditionally takes place over the second and third weeks of February. The festival has yet to set its 2020 dates.
The dates of this years Berlinale were pushed back to the second half of February – taking place from February 15-25 – because of the Winter Olympics in South Korea, and this could be a remedy to avoid the challenging industry overlap in 2020. In 2019, the festival runs February 7-17.
Ive heard industry chatter in recent months that Berlin could move out of its February slot entirely but that speculation has not been backed up by officials and at present a later February 2020 slot seems most likely for the important European festival.
The nominations for the 2019 BAFTA awards are announced on January 9. The EE Rising Star Award nominations will be announced on January 3. BAFTAs Awards Season Tea Party in Los Angeles will take place on January 5.
