Timothee Chalamet has expressed concerns a lack of self-identity may have negatively impacted his mental health.

The 22-year-old actor is currently sweeping award nominations for his role as Elio Perlman in Call Me By Your Name, which includes a nod on Bafta’s EE Rising Star Award and Best Leading Actor.

During a Bafta panel for the Rising Star award in London alongside fellow nominee Daniel Kaluuya, Timothee opened up about how his mixed family heritage has left him struggling with his own identity.

Speaking at the panel, Timothee said: ‘In the context of family, my mum was a third generation New Yorker, my dad was French.

‘I always feel tremendous ambiguity in the self-identity department which is maybe not great for mental health. But as far as acting goes it’s kind of great because I don’t know what I’m stretching from for roles.

‘When I’m watching myself in things, the difference is I don’t know what’s really going on here,’ pointing to himself.

Timothee is also nominated in the Best Actor category at this year’s Academy Awards, and also stars in fellow award contender Lady Bird directed by Greta Gerwig.
