Cheryl has been accused of ripping off 80s legend Paul Youngs popular song Love Of The Common People.

Music fans are pointing out that her comeback single Love Made Me Do It sounds like the 1982 tune.

The former Girls Aloud singer, who was slammed for her performance on X Factor last weekend, released her first single in eight years.

Now social media users and music insiders are pointing out that the song, which sits at number 48 in the midweek charts, sounds remarkably similar to the 80s hit.

A source told The Sun: Its been a big talking point in the music world how Cheryls song has huge similarities to Love Of The Common People.

When you play both the songs verses side by side theyre nearly identical and have the same rhythm and feel to it.

The insider adds: Its quite embarrassing for Cheryl, especially given shes trying to portray herself as an innovative songwriter.

Cheryl is credited as one of eight writers on the track and is in good company with the likes of Natasha Bedingfield and former band member Nicola Roberts.

Users on Twitter flocked to the website to make note of the similarities they claim to have heard.

Whenever I hear Cheryl Tweedys new song I automatically start singing Paul Youngs Common People … showing my age there … but they dunt half sound similar, said one music fan.

While another added: Cheryls new song reminds me of Paul Youngs Love of the Common People. #JustAnObservation.

Referring to the lyrics of Pauls song a music critic said: Cheryls new song really sounds like Love Of The Common People by Paul Young. At one point I thought she was going to start crying because she doesnt have a dress without a patch for the party to go.

Although some user couldnt agree any less, with one writing: … just listen to cheryl and paul.young songs I can honestly say they dont sound the same at all.

This comes after Cheryls performance on The X Factor on Sunday received several complaints with Ofcom over claims it was too sexual for the talents shows young audience.

The 35-year-old released the confessional track last week and debuted straight in at number 19, which was rather uneventful compared to her previous releases.

Now, the midweek charts reveal Love Made Me Do It has dropped dramatically 29 places to now sit at number 48.

It has also been revealed that Cheryls new single has not made it into BBC Radio 1s top playlist, which will no doubt impact her chart position even further given the lack of airplay.

Cheryl is having to fend off competition from Ariana Grandes monster single Thank U, Next and Little Mixs Woman Like Me, both of which are performing extremely well. Arianas track has been streamed 2.3 million times while Little Mix are riding high with 1.3 streams of their hit new single.
