Ammunition, firearms seized from illegal hunter during police search

AMMUNITION, illegal firearms, an unregistered vehicle and other property has been seized by police during a search warrant north of Dubbo.

As a result of extensive inquiries following reports of trespassing in the Gongolgon area, police from the Rural Crime Prevention Team and local police executed a search warrant at a home in Cooma Street, Quambone on September 12.

NSW Police state rural crime co-ordinator Detective Inspector Cameron Whiteside said a number of items were seized during the search.

“A search was conducted and police seized a quantity of property including an unregistered Nissan Patrol, a large quantity of ammunition and illegal firearm parts,” he said.

“After further inquiries police recently arrested a 36-year-old man from Cooma Street, Quambone.”

The man was charged with the following offences:

• Aggravated trespassing (trespassing accompanied by a hunting dog)
• Use unregistered motor vehicle
• Use uninsured motor vehicle
• Use Class A vehicle with unauthorised number plate
• Acquire firearm part without authority
• Possess ammunition without holding a licence or permit

“The mans vehicle has been seized as it was used in a game hunting offence, and there is an order before the court for the vehicle to be forfeited,” Detective Inspector Whiteside said.

The man was conditionally bailed to appear in Coonamble Local Court on October 16.

Detective Inspector Whiteside has urged people to get permission before entering a property and to hunt legally.

He has urged anyone with any information about people illegal hunting, including trespassing, to call your local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
