The eyes of the world were collectively turned on the Luzhinski Stadium, Russia on Thursday as Robbie Williams trotted out onto the manicured pitch to open the FIFA World Cup.

Yes, perplexingly, one of Britains most famous pop stars was opening the event but, shockingly, that isnt what got everyone talking.

Mostly the internet wanted to know why he looked like Morrissey – yeah they went there – and, of course, many just felt confused to be tuning in to what looked to be a Robbie Williams gig.

Belting out a four song mega-mix, the 44-year-old star looked to be loving the chance to open such a prestigious (if controversial) event.

However, fans at home couldnt help but feel Robbie wasnt the best person for the job, and promptly made their negative feelings known on Twitter.

Robbie Williams singing Angels dressed like fucking Zoolander mate, inject the World Cup right into my neck

Sorry I can't seem to find the World Cup opening ceremony. Just a Robbie Williams gig.

Some were confused.

Some said he looked like Ben Stillers Zoolander.

A lot of people couldnt help but feel with his silver hair and flamboyant dress sense that hed morphed into another Northern musical icon – Morrissey!

Yeah, it seems that a fair few people round the country/world thought that the once eternally youthful Rob had morphed into the former Smiths frontman.

Why didn't Russia show their culture instead of fucking Robbie Williams mincing about like a Poundland Morrissey on the Teletubbies set.

Robbie Williams is basically morphing into Morrissey, isn't he, face-wise?

Thats not to say he didnt have fans out there though, and a fair few people pointed out that its not exactly like we could have a whole stadium of Russians singing our lyrics back to us.

You can knock Robbie Williams as much as you like but until you can go into a stadium in Russia and have 50,000 people singing your lyrics you cant really judge.

True enough – until you let us loose at a karaoke bar at happy hour, just saying.

But it wasnt just his looks or performance that made Robbies World Cup opener a headline-hitting affair, as the former Take That star was also caught flipping off the world on FOXs live stream.

Not the wisest of moves Rob!
