West Coast power home to deny Geelong

Mark LeCras continued his good form to kick three goals and Jack Darling chipped in with two in the run home.

New forward livewire Liam Ryan also kicked three for the Eagles before being helped off the ground in the dying minutes of the game with a knee injury.

The Cats have their own injury concerns.

One of those players sidelined was Ablett, who injured his hamstring early in the final quarter.

Hed had 10 touches in the third term to get his side back in to the contest. The Cats led by eight points when he pulled up short holding his right thigh three minutes into the last.

Tom Hawkins, who had struggled to impact the game in the opening half, also came into the contest, kicking 2.2 in the third term, and finished with 3.3.

Geelong was probably a bit fortunate to still be in the game at that point. For the third consecutive week, they were kept in the contest mainly because of their oppositions inability to convert their chances.

Halfway through the second term, the Eagles had 4.9 on the board. After booting 4.6 in the opening term, from 24 inside 50 entries they allowed the Cats to start slowing the pace of the game and to get their hands on the football.

If only they had kicked straight.

Patrick Dangerfield, Sam Menegola and Ablett were the ones getting their hands on the ball, allowing the Cats to claw their way back in to the contest. Despite their fighting late comeback, Geelong cant continue to allow their opposition that many chances.

In round one, Geelong was fortunate to claim a three-point victory over Melbourne. The Demons had 23 more inside 50 entries and kicked an inaccurate 17.16 (118).

On Easter Monday, Hawthorn claimed a thrilling one-point win over the Cats, despite having 19 more journeys in to attack and kicking 13.16 (94).

On Sunday, West Coast looked like following the Cats opponents of previous weeks to keep them in the game.

This time though, the Eagles did make the Cats pay.

In three minutes just before the main break and sparked by the Eagles new crowd favourite Liam Ryan, West Coast booted three goals in three minutes to break the game open.

They turned a 16-point quarter-time lead into a 32-point advantage.

Sure, Harry Taylor and Lachie Henderson are sidelined with injuries, but even that pair at their best would quickly tire trying to stop the continuous forward forays the Cats midfield is giving up.

Geelong only managed to get 2.7 on the board at the main break, and those two goals were difficult to get.

Jed Bews ran from the back pocket to take a mark on the 50m line; and ruckman Esava Ratugolea was put on his goal line courtesy of a 50m penalty after one of the Eagles got too close to him after he'd taken a mark.

Ratugolea was one positive that came out of the trip West for Geelong.

He led the ruck after Rhys Stanley was a late withdrawal, replaced by Scott Selwood and finished with 14 touches and kicked two goals.

The other injury concerns for the Cats are Cam Gutherie (ankle) and Nakai Cockatoo (knee).

The Eagles will look to win a third consecutive game when they host the Gold Coast Suns next Saturday night. Geelong will look to regroup at home when they play St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday.
