Tim Burgess opens up about death of his drummer Jon Brookes in heartfelt listening party
The Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess has opened up about the death of his drummer, Jon Brookes, in a personal Twitter ‘listening party’.
Since the Madchester star started getting a following on social media (back in the day when his Twitter account was a ‘metaphorical metaphysical’ coffee shop), he has let fans into his world, and given them an insight into his life.
Part of this has included ‘listening parties’ where the singer invites fans to play a Charlatans album in its entirety whilst he talks about his inspirations behind each track.
Last night Tim sat down and spoke about his album, Modern Nature, where he brought up the death of The Charlatans’ drummer Jon Brookes, who died aged 44 in August 2013 after receiving treatment for a brain tumour.
In a string of heartfelt tweets the 50-year-old started the night by confessing the band were at a loose end once Jon’s tribute gig at the Royal Albert Hall had finished.
He wrote: ‘We didn’t know quite what to do after the night for Jon Brookes. We knew he’d want us to make another album so we got to work.’
The bowl-cut trend starter revealed that their track Let The Good Times Be Never Ending was the first song The Charlatans recorded after losing Jon.
He said: ‘We had to be super positive. Vibes don’t get more super positive.’
The drummer had apparently given the band ideas for some tracks before he passed away.
When talking about track eight, I Need You to know, Tim said: ‘Jon was involved in this one and although Pete played drums it was a copy of a pattern Jon had.
‘Jon had called us together and given us some ideas.’
He added: ‘He knew it would make us continue. Thanks Jon.’
Before Jon died, Tim became a father to the Littlest B, Morgan.

He confessed that the song Come Home Baby was written ‘quite a lot about becoming a dad and the joy it was bringing.’
He said: ‘Thought about the cycle of life after Jon’s death – cheery times but as leaves fall, something new grows, my little boy was born.’
