Why would Manchester City want to let go of Sergio Aguero?

It is one of the stranger conundrums of Pep Guardiola's time at the Etihad that questions continue to hang over the future of the Argentina star.

Guardiola has made some bold decisions since he arrived in English football. He has jettisoned England goalkeeper Joe Hart and marginalised the ever popular Yaya Toure.

But it would be a brave manager who kisses goodbye to the club's all-time record goalscorer.

The beauty of Aguero is that he responds to it all by doing what he has always done best. He is one of those players who finds happiness and freedom on the pitch, never looking troubled by the pressures of his job.

He scored twice here against Bournemouth and set up another for Raheem Sterling with a sumptuous pass.

It came on the day Sportsmail revealed that City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak sat down with Aguero on tour in Los Angeles in the summer to discuss the striker's concerns over his relationship with Guardiola.

That meeting occurred six months after the manager was pictured deep in conversation with Aguero and his agent in a Manchester restaurant in January following the arrival of Gabriel Jesus.

There have been other signs along the way that all is not well between player and manager. From Aguero casting uncertainty over his future towards the end of last season to his substitution against Tottenham last week when a pair of black gloves were thrown to the ground in frustration after he was replaced by Jesus.

Guardiola admits the 29-year-old is upset about starting the key games, an issue that has been brewing since last season.

He maintains they have a good relationship but the questions just won't go away.

There is no doubt Aguero has expanded his game under the new manager, but enough to satisfy the demanding Spaniard?

With City at the front of the queue to sign Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal as early as next month, the subject is unlikely to disappear any time soon.

The word within the Etihad is that Sanchez and Aguero can play together, and that may be true. But with Aguero already unsettled by the competition from Jesus, it could be getting very crowded in there soon.

It has also been pointed out that Aguero is Guardiola's son's favourite player, as if that would count for anything when it comes to making a decision about one of the most iconic players in the club's history.

Ultimately, it will come down to Guardiola, Aguero and the club's hierarchy.

Until then, you can bet that Aguero will carry on racking up the goals.
