The American musician, who also played with the Electric Eels, passed away on Friday night, with the news being confirmed by his Eels bandmate, John D. Morton.

My friend Nick Knox shuffled off the mortal coil last night, Morton wrote alongside a picture of the two, with Knox edited out.

Referring to the image in the post, Morton added: I saw a self-portrait of the artist Tseng Kwong Chi in front of the Eiffel Tower except his figure had been cut out. It was explained to me as a custom of remembering the dead by removing them from photos.

He had previously alluded to the drummers seriously ill-health, tweeting on Sunday: Nick Knox could use prayers or something. That is all I will say about it for now so pray or send thoughts but dont ask.

Former Cramps member Miriam Linna also posted a lengthy tribute for the drummer: Im writing this now before I have time to think logically.

I feel so regally let down by time and fate, that its difficult to do much more than marvel at the preposterous puppetmasters that act on whims and fancy to mess with our visions of perfection.

Kid Congo Powers, who played in The Cramps in the early 80s, hailed Knox as the coolest of the cool.

6Music DJ Marc Riley said: This fella never broke sweat. He drove the coolest band of the late 70s / early 80s. Appears on a string of killer records.. R.I.P. Nick Knox.

Knox shot to fame as the main-stay drummer of The Cramps, playing in the tumultuous line-up of the band from 1977-1991.

He also played with the influential proto-punk band, The Electric Eels in the 70s.
