express– With Falcon and The Winter Sioldier just wrapping up on Disney Plus this week, it is perfect timing to look forward to what comes next for Captain America. The creator of that show, Malcolm Spellman, will now move on to write and produce the fourth film in the classic superhero’s story. Fans had desperately hoped Evans might make a cameo in the show but now all eyes will be on the next big screen outing.
The news broke earlier today in a world exclusive from The Hollywiood Reporter announcing Spellman’s involvement.
It said: “The head writer and show creator behind Disney+ and Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is developing a fourth installment of the Captain America film franchise for Marvel Studios
“Spellman will co-write the script with Dalan Musson, a staff writer on Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”
Back in January, Hollywood commentator Grace Randolph said she had heard that Evans had been in talks over the New Year to return to his iconic role.
All the speculation at the time centred on a possible appearance in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, rather than a new Captain America film.
This would allow Evans to reprise the role but with a twist, perhaps playing the iconic ‘evil Captain America’ from the comics who is a secret HYDRA sleeper agent.
But now the door is wide open again, following the latest news.
The latest report said: “The feature is likely to continue the story of Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, and the current wielder of the shield. But as the writers get to work, it will interesting to see how the story unfolds with there now being multiple people who have been Captain Americas in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“No director is attached and Evans’ involvement or return remains unconfirmed. Marvel was tight-lipped as usual.”
Although he played a very old Steve Rogers at the end of Avengers Endgame, could Evans really come back as his younger self – but evil?
Grace Randolph said: “This is already happening very quickly and I’m already hearing rumours of ‘Evil Cap.’ This time he will say ‘Hail Hydra’ – and mean it.”
This refers to the huge and hugely controversial Secret Empire comic book storyline where Hydra recruited him as a young child.
Secret Empire was a 2017 Marvel Comics limited series and crossover storyline following on from Avengers: Standoff! and the ongoing series Captain America: Steve Rogers. At the time it hit headlines but also angered many fans unhappy to see their greatest hero subverted as an evil fascist.
The original report in January fro industry publication Deadline had said: “Chris Evans is cleaning the dust off his Captain America attire as he is expected reprise the role in the MCU in some form.
“Still vague if deal is completely closed but insiders say it’s headed in that direction for Evans to return as Steve Rogers aka Captain America in at least one Marvel property with the door open for a second film.”
At the time, Evans and Marvel shot down the reports. With the news of another Captain America film, all eyes will be back on Evans again.
