billboard– While everyone is talking about music industry award snubs, spare a thought for The Smashing Pumpkins. Billy Corgan’s alternative rockers were one of the standouts in the ‘90s, a decade stacked with standout rock bands.
The Chicago outfit has won two Grammy Awards, but never been nominated for the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, for which they’ve been eligible since 2016, a full quarter century since the release of their debut album Gish.
They’ll get their chance. Last week, Corgan and Co. returned with an eleventh studio album CYR, their first double collection since the classic Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, from 1995.
On Tuesday night (Dec. 1), Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlin, James Iha and Jeff Schroeder stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, for a virtual performance of the album’s title track, a tune drenched in the darker hues of ‘80s synth pop.
Based on midweek data, the new double album could be the Smashing Pumpkins’ first U.K. Top 40 record in eight years.
There’s a whole lot more to come. The band recently announced plans for a 33-track sequel to Mellon Collie, and teased a world arena tour announcement to come in 2021
