Doctor Sleep, the highly anticipated sequel to The Shining, has received a creepy first trailer.

Based on Stephen Kings novel, Doctor Sleep follows an adult, alcoholic Danny Torrence (Ewan McGregor) who is tormented by events in his childhood, whose shining abilities re-emerge as he attempts to become sober.

The first trailer sees Danny greeted with Redrum scratched into the wall, along with numerous flashbacks to classic scenes from Stanley Kubricks The Shining.

Alongside Ewan McGregor, the film also stars Rebecca Ferguson, Carl Lumbly and Alex Essoe.

While the idea of delivering a sequel to a beloved classic may sound heinous, the film is directed by Mike Flanagan who received acclaim for Netflix horror series The Haunting Of Hill House.

Stephen King famously wasnt a fan of Kubricks interpretation of The Shining due to its differences with the novel, but McGregor has previously stated Doctor Sleep will be more faithful to the original book.

Speaking with USA Today, Ewan said: I think he felt The Shining wasnt a faithful adaptation of his book. Our script is faithful to his novel.

But for one thing. And Im not going to give anything away.

Doctor Sleep is released in cinemas on 8 November.
