Perfect conditions expected for the Pro

Perfect conditions are expected for this year's Margaret River Pro which starts at Main Break tomorrow. The event is part of the World Surf League's Championship Tour and is supported by the State Government, through Tourism WA. The competition attracts the world's top 34 professional men and top 17 professional women surfers, including current world champions Gabriel Medina and Stephanie Gilmore. An opportunity to secure a guaranteed wildcard entry into the main draw will also be made available to one WA man and one WA woman through pre event trials. Thousands of spectators are expected to travel to the region to watch the event, held at Margaret River Main Break with the added option of utilising backup locations of The Box and North Point if conditions are favourable. The event will also be showcased through digital platforms and a global television broadcast with material promoting the South-West as a desirable surf and tourism destination. Tourism Minister Paul Papalia said the event was a huge benefit for the state. "The Pro attracts thousands of spectators to the region to see the biggest international surf stars, while millions more watch from around the globe. "It's an ideal event to showcase the beauty of this region and to entice more travellers to experience it for themselves." Mr Papalia was quick to stamp out discussion over last year's shark scares, saying he was pleased to see increased monitoring in the area and that the water at Main Break was "one of the safety stretches of water in the world."
