Pirates enjoying the experience of Champions League football

Cape Town – Orlando Pirates attacker Mpho Makola says the club have huge ambitions of reaching the group stages of the CAF Champions League, ahead of Wednesday's clash with Light Stars.

The Sea Robbers go into the contest with a 5-1 Preliminary Round first-leg lead having hammered the Seychelles minnows in last Wednesday's clash at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.

Pirates are set to face Stars at the Amitie Stadium in Praslin on Wednesday with a place in the first round at stake.

Should the Buccaneers progress as expected, they are set to face either Volcan Club from the Comoros or African Stars of Namibia in the next stage.

As such, Makola takes the view that it is important to get the job done against the Seychelles First Division outfit.

"Obviously it's a great feeling to be back. We have a couple of new players that have not really played continental football, but there are those who are new and have played, so they have a bit of experience," he said.

"We are just looking to have fun while playing, enjoy the moment, and hopefully we will reach the group stages of the tournament. So, we will just take it one game at a time."

In the first-leg Pirates named virtually an entire team based on fringe players in the squad, including Makola, and it is expected coach Milutin Sredojevic will once again repeat the exercise.

Pirates are set to face Baroka in the Telkom Knockout final on Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, and it therefore appears top performers such as Xola Mlambo, Vincent Pule, Justin Shonga and captain Happy Jele won't be risked against Stars.
