‘Reinvigorate the bush’: New Barwon MP delivers maiden speech

Shooters, Fishers and Farmers (SFF) Member for Barwon Roy Butler has given his first speech as a member of parliament on Wednesday. Mr Butler took the time to focus on the future of communities in the Barwon electorate and his goals for the next four years. "In this election the people were asked to review the actions of government, to reflect on the reality of the present, to cast their minds forward to future generations and the world we are creating," he said in parliament on Wednesday. "To everyone in this house and the other place I say to you, we have work to do. "It is my absolute intention to leave a legacy of improved quality of life for people living in Barwon and regional NSW." A clear message was sent from the west after the state election when Mr Butler, who promoted the message 'Barwon deserves better', wrestled the seat from the 70-year reign of the Nationals. "Go into any community across Barwon and you'll meet passionate people who want to work with government to ensure a better quality of life and brighter future for the next generation. "People don't want government to solve all their problems or simply throw money at an issue. Story continues after video: "What they want is recognition from government that at this moment in the history of NSW we stand faced with a choice. We continue to treat the communities of western NSW in the same manner we have been, or we change our policy settings and we reinvigorate the bush. "We need to assume that we don't know best and engage with local government and local community representative groups to ensure we're acting in a way that's consistent with what they want." Mr Butler restated his election commitments to the people he represents. "No highways, no buildings, nothing. My election commitments were simple, to work hard and be honest and people accepted those commitments and I intend to maintain them," he said on Wednesday. He said he was committed to working with the community and listening to people to build a future where children in Barwon have the same opportunity as those in Sydney, to ensure those living in far west NSW don't continue to have their life expectancy decreased, and to start opening doors for communities to thrive. "I look forward to working with local government, community organisations and individuals to realise their aspirational goals. It is my absolute intention to leave a legacy of improved quality of life for people living in communities across the electorate," he said. "To the people of Barwon I will work my hardest to make your voices heard and make sure your priorities are addressed. Thank you for your trust and confidence."
