Margaret River resident Stephen Bebbington is set to realise one of his lifelong dreams by abseiling 40 storeys down the QV1 skyscraper in Perth's CBD this Friday. The 49 year old father of three young children is paralysed from the waist down, experiencing life changing injuries in a car accident in 2007. Now, the successful businessman is preparing to rappel down the 165-metre building in a few days, on behalf of the charity Building Belonging Inc. "Prior to the accident, I loved to travel all over the world, especially high-altitude trekking in places like Peru, Nepal and Tibet," said Mr Bebbington. "I always enjoyed trying new things, scuba-diving, white water rafting, climbing volcanoes, bungee jumping and anything new. "Since then the opportunities have been a little more restricted, so you can imagine how excited I am to be taking on this amazing challenge." Faced with the daunting task, Mr Bebbington said he was relying on experienced abseiling specialists to keep him safe. "I'm trying not to think about it too much, but when I do, I get pretty nervous. The thought of initially going over the edge, 40 storeys high, the building on one side, emptiness on the other, is nerve-racking, to say the least. "The great thing is that I know I'm in safe hands. The Urban Descent team have specialist equipment and a team of volunteers who have been encouraging no boundaries, regardless of age or disability for over 16 years." Mr Bebbington is hoping to raise over $2,000 for Building Belonging Inc. who take on renovation projects for charities at no cost. "I used to sit on the Committee for this charity and have seen firsthand some of the life-changing renovations that the team of building volunteers have undertaken," he said. "Like the Lucy Saw Women's Refuge Centre in Rockingham – we upgraded the waiting area for refuge's clients – the space then became one where clients could feel comfortable during a traumatic time. "Every dollar raised will go towards providing another cost-free renovation for a not-for-profit company." Donations can be made by here.
