Some seasoned judges ahead of this season opined that the Gold Coast Suns might be the weakest team to take the field in the AFL era since Fitzroys death throes – and that includes Gold Coasts initial entry into the competition in 2011.
But Alex Sexton, who re-signed to the club until 2023 this week, says the feeling inside the club is far more robust.

Sexton was a star in his sides scrappy win over the Fremantle Dockers, kicking 4.5 in a total of 7 goals, 19 behinds.
“You only have to hang around inside the four walls to know we have spirit and belief in this group and I think we deserved that one. We work our bums off and to get that win is massive,” he said.

“We could have capitalised more, and given ourselves less of a heart attack, but Im proud of the boys that we won.”
“We pride ourselves on effort, weve built a lot of resilience over the summer and that was our focus going into this game, because we knew theyve got a strong midfield. It was a matter of winning the hard ball and going from there.”

He played down his own crucial role in the win, noting the development of Brayden Fiorini and Jack Bowes in matching a seasoned Fremantle midfield. “My role comes off the back of midfielders getting the work done, so without that I dont get my hands on the footy.”
