Kreuzer in selection frame but Curnow a week away

Matthew Kreuzer has made a successful return from injury and is under strong consideration for a senior recall against the Gold Coast Suns.

Kreuzer's pre-season was derailed by knee surgery but he returned in a VFL intra-club clash last weekend, as the Northern Blues had an opening-round bye.

The veteran ruckman impressed with his work across the ground but the winless Blues have yet to determine whether he needs another week in the VFL to regain full match fitness or should take on the impressive Suns at Metricon Stadium on Sunday.

Blues high-performance chief Andrew Russell said Kreuzer had made a strong return.

"Matthew Kreuzer had a really good weekend of training. We had a VFL intra-club practice match and he played really good minutes there," Russell said.

"We expect him to have a full week of training and be available for selection this week at either VFL or AFL level."

Kreuzer's return eases the pressure on the ruck stocks, with Andrew Phillips a late withdrawal against Sydney on Saturday, replaced by Matthew Lobbe.

Phillips had a corked quad but Russell said he would be fit to resume this week.

Forward Mitch McGovern will need to prove his fitness, having been benched in the third term on Saturday because of injury. He has been cleared of a typical hamstring strain, for the tightness there was linked to a hip problem.
