Members of the Bogan Shire community will have the chance to meet passionate golfer Gary Smokey Dawson at this years Australia Day ceremony. Mr Dawson is best known for his passion for golf and and fundrasing efforts through the sport for valuable causes over the past 25 years, and will this year be the Bogan Shires 2019 Australia Day ambassador. Over the past 25 years Mr Dawson has raised over $18 million for charities including: NSW Wheel Chair Sports, Hearts in Union, Bear Cottage, Camp Quality, the Special Olympics, Kids Xpress, St Edmunds School, Heart Research Australia The Childrens Cancer Institute Australia, Cystic Fibrosis, Cerebral Palsy Alliance, Ronald McDonald Childrens Charities, Melanoma Foundation, Australian Leukodystrophy Group, Starlight Foundation, Australian Paralympic Team, Autism Spectrum, Special Olympics, Paraquad NSW, Spine Safe, Sunny Field Association, Reach Out, the Womens and Infants Research Foundation in WA, and the Channel 7 Telethon Appeal WA . Mr Dawson works alongside friend and professional golfer Matthew Laverty hosting corporate golf and charity based golf events. Mr Dawson and Mr Laverty aim to inspire people to improve and enjoy the game of golf. Their tips are often credited with improving peoples games in a positive way. Extreme golfing challenges are one of Mr Dawsons fortes, having played more than 50 golf marathons (or speed golf), covering at times over 150kms on foot in a day hitting the little white ball. He has featured on many television programs, and in golf magazines and newspapers worldwide for his contribution to the community and Australian Charities. In 2004 Mr Dawson was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his contribution to Sport and Community Service. Aside from sport Mr Dawson is passionate about reading, and is a keen supporter of the Books in Homes program which encourages literacy in children. Apart from Mr Dawsons golfing achievements, he has been an accomplished swimmer, runner and triathlete. He still holds the over 50 age and open swimming records one dating back to the 60s. The Bogan Shire Council will celebrate Australia Day from 8am at the Nyngan Town Hall. The morning will commence with a free barbecue breakfast, followed by the awards presentation at 9am. There will be free entry into the Nyngan Pool on the day.
