A Willy Wonka theory that has been doing the rounds on social media suggests Violet Beauregarde should have been the one who took the chocolate factory, not Charlie.
And we have to say were sort of on board this theory.
Why?
Well, one crafty Tumblr blogger by the moniker of Evayna is evidently extremely passionate about the whole thing, as they took to the platform to wax lyrical on all the reasons why they felt Violet was more equipped in expertise and spirit in taking the factory over from old mate Wonka.
In a very long, detailed post put up late last month, which took off this week, the blogger wanted everyone to know they felt Violet should have taken out the competition not only from her sheer determination to win a Golden Ticket, but by sticking up for the Oompa Loompas, her willingness to put her body on the line and test out the (yet to be cleared) three-course-meal gum and finally, her natural business smarts perhaps inherited from her father.
The post started off with a point about her being the most knowledgeable about candy. Which is a good start for any punters wanting to take over a candy factory.

Shes committed to it, and knows her stuff. When Wonka holds up a little yellow piece across the room, she recognizes it immediately, the post continued. She was able to switch to candy bars for the sake of the contest, so we know she has personal discipline and is goal oriented. Also, two major projects play directly into her strong suits: the 3-course-meal gum that Wonka failed to make safe (gum) and the neverending gobstopper (longevity).
Next, it was her natural fit for running a business: Violet is competitive, determined, hard working, and willing to take risks. Her father is a small town car salesman and politician, so she could easily pick up knowledge and support from him.
While Avayna then did admit Veruca Salts father is also a businessman, Veruca herself, the egg-trampling vixen, has no respect of hard work so she wouldnt do at all. A real bad egg.
Shes the most sympathetic to the Oompa Loompas, point three added of Violet. She critiques Veruca when Veruca demands to buy one. More importantly, Wonka has been testing the 3-course-meal gum that always goes wrong on Oompa Loompas while he presumably just watches. Violet is ready to put herself on the front line, instead of treating the Oompa Loompas as disposable, and would therefore be a better boss.
See where were really vibing this theory?
Next her personality flaw, as proferred by the Oompa Loompas in their main song at the beginning of the tour, is something she can easily overcome – chewing gum. Which, according to the workers of the factory, is not socially acceptable to chew all day. Easily fixed!

The thing is, we already know that she can stop if she wants, because she already did that to win the golden ticket, the blog continued. And yeah, she is defensive about the perceived impoliteness of her hobby (like when her mother tries to shame her about her habit during a televised interview) but the obsession with candy and neglect of social norms is EXACTLY what Wonka is all about. This is on brand.
While each kid is eventually weaselled out of their run at owning the factory by Wonka as they misstep and fudge up a crucial room (pun most definitely intended) – were talking Augustus drinking the chocolate river and being caught in the suction pipe, Mike Teavee shrinking himself…
Avayna reasons of Violet: Her misstep in the factory is reasonable. Wonka shows everyone a candy hes very proud of. Violet is like “oh sick, thats gum, my special interest.” Wonka then pulls a “WRONG! Its amazing gum!” In the very moments before she takes the gum Wonka has mislead her just to belittle her.
So when hes like “I wouldnt do that” why should she give a shit what he has to say? Shes not like Charlie over here whos all “Sure Gramps, lets stay behind while the tour leaves and secretly drink this thing that has been explicitly stated to fill you with gas and is too powerful for safe consumption, oh and also I just saw what happened to Violet so I actually KNOW what this stuff can be capable of”.
The real clincher is her selflessness, which is something a lot of the other kids dont have. Even poor little Charlie had a case of the me me me, as he still went out on his own in order to try that prohibited burpy drink without sharing it with anyone else.

Also, Violet is not selfish about her experience, she tells everyone what shes tasting and feeling, and everyone is eager to hear it. Taking a personal risk to share knowledge with everyone, Avayna continued. Violet is Prometheus: fact.
So Augustus contaminates the chocolate river. Charlie sneaks around and contaminates the vent walls. Veruca destroys and disrupts the workspace. Mike knows exactly what will happen to him and transports/shrinks himself deliberately. Violet had no idea what the gum could potentially do to her, and caused no harm to anyone or anything but herself.
Lastly: Can you imagine Charlie filling Wonkas shoes? That passive, naive boy? Violet is already basically Wonka. Shes passionate, sarcastic, candy-obsessed, free thinking, and a total firecracker. Shes even better than Wonka, because she doesnt endanger others.
Of course this yarn was picked up on Twitter and everyone really ran with it as they picked up everything it was putting down.
Many had their own hot takes on why Violet was passed up, with one punter calling the gender divide: This just proves how women are easily passed over for higher positions of power even though they bag all the qualifications and more.
This also struck me as odd, in every version, another added. Shes ambitious, shes competitive and not afraid to open her mouth. Its kind of weird how she gets punished for admirable traits and an insatiable curiosity. Charlie is… Well, kind of dull?

That was met with some reasons why Charlie was perfect to take over the factory, though: Right but he follows directions, doesnt go off half cocked like violet and the others. Hes thoughtful, not reckless. The book and the movie are pushing one point hard. Be a good citizen. Dont think outside the box. Conform. Charlie does that well. He wins because hes a drone.
Eh whats done it done and Charlie is probably still kicking back in that chocolate factory somewhere, eating that never ending gopstopper, just loving life.
Oh, also, this is fiction.
