The Russo Brothers have kept many cards close to their chest when it comes to Avengers, however during a q&a session they recently revealed Thanos was meant to hold a much larger role in Infinity War.

Like, larger than obliterating half the universe? Seems so.

The directing duo said an earlier version of the script had the Mad Titan giving a voiceover during the flick. Which was meant to offer much more of a backstory to the villain, played by Josh Brolin.

After a two-hour screening of the most recently of the Avengers instalments, Joe and Anthony took to the stage and engaged with punters in the session hosted by Collider.

Here they explained the earliest drafts of the blockbuster included a non-linear story, narrated by Thanos, which gave fans an added insight into the past of the lad. It also included back-stories of the Black Order, should you be interested.

However, as the brothers added, the script came in at an impressive, and way too long, 250 pages, meaning Thanos big moment as story teller had to be scrapped.

We did three drafts of this that were all radically different. One draft involved Thanos as the narrator of the film, the men explained, according to Gizmodo. It was non-linear in structure, it had backstories for the Black Order, and they were all introduced in very cool sequences. But it ended up being a 250-page script and we thought, “Alright, we cant fit all of this storytelling”.

Still, through creating that particular storyline, as mammoth as it may have been, it meant the brothers gained a special insight into their main man that shaped how he was finally cut in the edit.

They explained the cut script became the bible for the movie: You gain a lot of information. You write characters out in a way that you start to understand what it is they want.

I think writing out Thanos narration gave us insight into who he was as a character and what we wanted him to do in this film. So then it was much easier once we started pulling all that out to make it subtext for him as a character, and to make a more linear structure.

Thanos has become a villain with a bit of soul, as punters began to dive into the comic book characters persona, that dates back decades after he joined the Marvel world in 1973.

So we can only assume the kind of feels wed have for him, even though he really broke our hearts and ruined a lot of our favourite Avengers, turning them to dust, had we been given a backstory on screen.

Perhaps well see a little more of this ditched 250-page script in Avengers 4. Whenever it wants to drop a trailer…

Avengers 4 is out 26 April, 2019.
