Were not sure how many more reboots and reunions the world can take right now, but weve been blessed with another in the shape of Shrek.

The not-so-meagre ogre is making a return to the screen, in a new project helmed by the creator of Despicable Me, Chris Meledandri.

Puss in Boots, the fairytale character that found its modern renewal in the animated series, will also get another injection of life.

In confirming he was indeed bringing back the massive green character, originally voiced by Mike Myers, Meledandri admitted his aim is to get the OG cast back – which also included Eddie Murphy in the role of lovable Donkey.

When you look back on those vocal performances theyre awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterisations, he told Variety. The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like its not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.

While were sure Meledandris intentions are pure and he wants to bring the character to a whole new audience, seeing as the original one is all grown up now, fans of the franchise are prepping their pitchforks and are prepared to riot should the canon be messed with.

One fan reacted on Twitter: How can you reboot an angel??? how can you improve a god?????

If literally anything changes about his design I am rioting

Another added: Just do shrek 5 please not this.

It might come as not the biggest surprise were getting another turn, seeing as the parent company of Universal, who is heading up the project, Comcast, bought DreamWorks Animation, the studio who made the OG Shreks, in 2016 for a cheeky $3.8 billion (£2.9billion).

Guess if it made money once, its SURE to make it again, right?

Theyve already had a crack at remaking the Grinch, and Meledandri thinks theres a lot more fun to be had with Shrek. Despite what the Internet thinks.

Theres a tremendous amount of fun to be had in that world, but its a high bar to find a story thats truly [the] world, he said. You want to find something in the narrative that really feels like a departure.
