This Sunday at 11am the Centenary of the end of the First World War will be remembered. Members of the local Sub-branch, led by President Derek Francis will explain the significance of this special Remembrance Day which will include why a tree will be planted. A speech from Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair will be read, wreaths laid and other significant procedures carried out to commemorate and remember the 60,000 Australian Soldiers who failed to return from this War. Please come and help our town and district remember.
All ratepayers and residents of Bogan Shire will receive a flyer later this week explaining the current situation at the Palais Theatre and suggested options to repair or replace the Theatre. The flyer will briefly explain a Structural Engineers report that has identified serious damage to the floor, foundations, walls and ceiling and Councils preferred option to reconstruct the Theatre. We are seeking community input into what course to follow. Please tick one of the three options you would prefer Council to follow, sign and return by 19 November 2018. Grant funding will have to be the major source of funding for any reconstruction.
From all reports the big boxing night last weekend at the RSL was a great success. Many contestants, trainers and followers joined a large crowd of local supporters who all enjoyed a well organised event. Thanks to Troy Richards and his helpers for making sure the evening met expectations, and gave a major boost to the towns local economy.
Councils budget review for the first three months of the 2018/2019 financial year was presented to our October Meeting. Our performance against budget remains unchanged with a small surplus of $770 across all funds reported to be still in place.
The new Cemetery entrance has been completed with an archway between two vertical columns erected, brickwork constructed to half the height of the columns and roadway completed. We hope all are pleased with the outcome.
The Bogan Shire Councils Drought Appeal Fund continues to operate with $4,500 of assistance provided for the period September 24 to October 15. Vouchers to local businesses of up to $500 are available to residents of Bogan Shire experiencing financial difficulties from the drought.
Doctors and Locums for our Medical Centre are secured until the end of June 2019. The current appointment waiting times at the Centre was provided to Council. Dr Hanley one week, Dr Lockey three days and the Nyngan Health Service Locum on the day.
We still remain very concerned for safety about the speed of some ore trains travelling through town. Some well exceed the average speed told to us by John Holland Rail of 40 km per hour. This situation has not been helped by the failure of Minister Pavey to respond to our concerns. Flashing lights are urgently needed at the Hoskins Street crossing.
