Nyngans early aviators will be remembered

A recent gathering of family members, friends and a number of pilots was held at the Nyngan Airport Terminal to remember the late Bill Taylor. Bill will be remembered as one of Nyngans early aviators, making many drops of food and other supplies to properties during the floods of the 1950s. Bill had requested that his ashes be spread at the Nyngan aerodrome which Elliot Hayden and Greg Deacon carried out during the afternoon. He apparently took part in one of the England to Sydney air races. His family, and a number of pilots who Bill taught to fly will ensure a suitably worded plaque be placed inside the terminal in memory of Bills contribution to local aviation. Thank you to all those local residents who have returned the tear off section of the recent flyer sent out regarding future options for the Palais Theatre. I know a number of you have also spoken to local Councillors. Council will have the results of this survey at our meeting tomorrow November 22. The students, teachers and others responsible for putting on the performance at the Town Hall last week are to be commended for staging the event under very different conditions to the Palais Theatre. The new light poles and lights at Larking Oval, and at the netball courts have been installed and look very impressive, funded by the State Governments Stronger Country Communities Fund. Im sure all those who have been unsuccessful with previous applications for grants to install the lights, and laboured through the application process, will be very pleased to see the lights in place. Bogan Shire was one of the four Councils advised by the Federal Government that we were eligible for grant funding of up to $1million from the Australia Governments Drought Communities Program. The main idea for this funding was to provide money for more employment of people or contractors who may have otherwise been employed for the harvest and facilitate the flow of some of this money through local business. This Government funding is certainly appreciated, however Councils are not eligible to do these works themselves, or submit projects that are part of their core or business as usual operations. Projects need to be finished by June 30 2019. A lot of staff time and effort has gone into obtaining quotes and submitting the necessary application details for the following projects within the required criteria. This has not been easy as we dont have a lot of local contractors, Projects submitted in order of priority were: 1. Larkin Oval – improvements to canteen/announcer box ($350,000), 2. Pool Entry/Facade upgrade ($65,000), 3. Wye Pavilion – Restoration ($30,000), 4. Upgrade and painting of CBD awnings and shopfronts including Post Office ($250,000), 5. Pool – Amenities Upgrade ($50,000), 6. Pool – Childrens splash play area and half Basketball Court, 7. Coolabah Hall ($100,000), 8. Gravel Resheeting ($250, 000), 9. Town Hall Kitchen ($60,000), 10. Nyngan Historical Structures ($50,000).
