He has worked on iconic franchises such as Harry Potter and Star Wars as well as many other blockbuster releases.
The 86-year-old was set to appear with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall this Friday but had to pull out because of an illness.
He has had 24 nominations and 4 wins in the Golden Globe and 51 nominations and 5 wins in the Academy Awards.
He is the second most nominated person in the history of the Academy Awards, only trailing behind Walt Disney.

His first Oscar nomination came in 1967 for Best Score Adaptation with Valley of the Dolls.
In 1972 he was nominated for a Golden Globe for the first time thanks to his work on The Poseidon Adventure.
He didnt get his first Golden Globe win until 1975 with his score for the Stephen Spielberg movie Jaws.
Some of his biggest successes include the original Star Wars soundtrack, as well as E.T., Indiana Jones and Schindlers List.
He also worked on the first Harry Potter film as well as The Prisoner of Azkaban.
Most recently he has composed music the new Star Wars films, as well as Tom Hanks movie The Post and the upcoming Indiana Jones.
