The trailer for The Curse of La Llorona is the latest terrifying flick to have you may risk your trousers in the quest to make it to the end.

Based on the Mexican folktale of the same name, meaning The Weeping Woman, just a few minutes of the clip has punters squirming and describing it as sheer terror.

Like, the tagline is She wants your children, for Petes sake.

So thats something to look forward to when the whole thing is released next year.

However, one such detail has keen viewers also a little pissed off – the fact it doesnt star a Mexican in the lead role.

Punters believe the lead should be a Latinax star (Picture: Warner Bros.)

In a nutshell, the iconic folktale centres on a beautiful poor woman who falls in love with a rich man who marries her, but embarrassed by her poverty, abandons her and their children. In payback, she throws her children into the river, drowning them, then jumps in after them hoping to die.

She is then cursed to wander between Heaven and Hell looking for her children in order to move on.

A tale used to scare children who stay out too late, those who hear her death call in the night are doomed.

One Twitter user explained: She is believed to be the goddess Chihuacóatl, who takes child sacrifices and flips boat who come too close to her.

They added: People have sighted Maria wearing a white dress around rivers and wailing for her lost children, for shes never found them.

Sounds pretty terrifying if you ask us.

But the casting of Linda Cardellini in the role of Anna Garcia in 1970s Los Angeles has people a little turned off, wondering why showrunners didnt place a Mexican in the role – after all, it is about a local tale and led by a Latinx director and a cast of Latinx actors.

Cardillini will play social worker Anna and her two young children will get caught up in La Lloranas supernatural world with her haunting vocals.

Until then, Twitter is a pretty vocal place as people sound off their worries

After she said “la llorana” they way she did, I knew this movie was going to do no justice to one of the most terrifying stories of my childhood. Its a no from me. pic.twitter.com/aWPUif5L6c

Others were wiling to give it the benefit of the doubt…if they could make it to the end of the trailer, that is.

Still, while the internet is currently debating over the reasons why a white actress shouldnt have been cast in the main role, the flick, director by James Wan, of The Conjuring game, still looks ruddy scary.
