The annual Scarred For Life hockey match will be held at the Margaret River Hockey Club this weekend, in honour of past hockey club members Ken Howes and Stuart (Scar) Campbell.
The first Scarred For Life match was held in February last year in memory of the two Margaret River locals, who tragically took their own lives in 2016. According to club president Colin Fox, the game was established to raise funds for projects to support suicide prevention and mental health awareness.
“The club committee and members decided a memorial match was the perfect way to remember and honour these past players,” said Mr Fox.
“Last years match raised funds for a metal health awareness session for local sporting clubs featuring Perth psychologist Caroline Rodgers, and ex-Australian hockey champion Simon Orchard.”
The efforts also let to the creation of the clubs award winning Above the Line program and the forming of the spmr (Suicide Prevention Margaret River) support group.
The next Scarred For Life match will be held at the Western Pavilion in Margaret River on Saturday October 13, where Settlers will take on Breakers from 11am.
There will be a raffle and sausage sizzle ($3) to generate funds for the clubs next mental health project. A short game format will keep the action fun and fast paced as players from around the region and as far north as Perth battle it out for the trophy.
Mr Fox said he hoped community members would head down to the game to support the projects and to remember the two club stalwarts.
“Whether youre a hockey fan or not, the wider community is very welcome to join in the fun and support this important cause.”
