Ever since the success of Marvels Cinematic Universe, Hollywood execs have been fighting it out to see who can build the most lucrative movie world.

So far, were yet to see a similar project in the horror genre, but that is all about to change.

Director James Wan (The Conjuring, Saw) helmed the first and third movies in the Conjuring franchise, but is planning many more (besides Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation and The Nun).

One of the things that occurred to us early on is, “They have a superhero universe, why cant we do that in the horror world?” he said in a new featurette.

When we were making the first Conjuring, it became very apparent to us that there could be a bigger universe. So many other stories that would be awesome to look into.

Meanwhile, The Nun director Corin Hardy revealed Wan stepped in to help out on the new film.

Very excitingly, James Wan was my second unit director in a little bit of additional photography, said Hardy.

It is funny, but we did some additional photography, and youre always pushing for double what you really can afford, time – or budget-wise. I said, “I want to do all of this, but if were going to do it, we really need to run two units.”

James is a full-on, hands-on guy and he was like, “Anything I can do of service!” It was like, “I really want to take you up on that.” So, there were nights when he was shooting a section in the forest and I was shooting interiors.

Earlier this month, YouTube was forced to remove an advert for The Nun after it was deemed too terrifying by fans.

The ad, which played before regular ads on YouTube, was just six seconds long and featured a jump scare from everyones least favourite holy lady.

Not cool, Mr Wan.

The Nun is set for release on 7 September.
