Steve Komphela managerial factfile

Cape Town – Sport24 takes a closer look at Steve Komphela's record while at the helm of Kaizer Chiefs with the club failing to lift a single trophy in three years.

Steve Komphela was appointed as the head coach of Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs in June 2015 taking over the reigns from Stuart Baxter.

The Glamour Boys had just come off winning a cup double and had been crowned Absa Premiership champions twice in the previous three years.

Komphela's managerial record before his appointment at Kaizer Chiefs was a winning record of just 35% although being in charge of lesser clubs such as Free State Stars and Maritzburg United.

Komphela managerial record before Kaizer Chiefs:

  • Matches: 224
  • Wins: 79
  • Draws: 70
  • Losses: 75
  • Win%: 35.3

During his spell at the helm of Chiefs – who are the most successful and most popular club in South African football – the 50-year-old failed to finish within the top three in their previous two seasons.

Chiefs currently find themselves in fourth position – 13 points adrift of pace setters Mamelodi Sundowns – at the time of Komphela's resignation.

Kaizer Chiefs league position under Komphela:

  • 2015/2016: 5th position (25 points behind winners Mamelodi Sundowns)
  • 2016/2017: 4th position (10 points behind winners Bidvest Wits)
  • 2017/2018: 4th position (13 points currently behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns)

Komphela's dismal winning record of just 42% perhaps highlights his failure to adapt to the big stage at club that demands trophies.
