Two much loved members of the Nyngan community, Annie Quarmby and Patricia “Bay” Lovett, were announced as the Bogan Shire Senior Citizens of the Year during the Seniors Week celebrations last week.
Bogan Shire mayor Ray Donald presented Ms Quarmby with her award at a morning tea held in the Nyngan Town Hall. Ms Lovett was unfortunately unable to attend the presentation but will be recognised in the near future.
Ms Quarmby is known for her happy and obliging disposition. She volunteers at the Nyngan Museum where she ensures everything is always “ship shape” and visitors are always made to feel welcome. Ms Quarmby also helps with “Meals on Wheels” and “Days for Girls” and has played the organ at the Uniting Church for many years.
Similarly MS Lovett has made a diverse contribution to the local community. She has been a much loved foster carer for many, a girl guide leader for over 30 years, an active member of the Nyngan CWA, View Club, the Uniting and Baptist churches and has helped for many years with Meals on Wheels, Wrap with Love and the Nyngan Museum.
The other nominees were Colin “Codge” McCarthy and Steve Read, who are also tireless contributors to the local community.
Steve Read has worked tirelessly as president of the Nyngan Bowling Club, often doing stints behind the bar or as greenkeeper before and after work. He has helped co-ordinate many charity days at the club to raise money for charitable causes. Steve is currently ringmaster at the Nyngan Show, and for many years has used his musical talent to entertain. He and his mum Doreen have also given many hours to maintaining the grounds of the Nyngan Anglican Church.
Colin “Codge” McCarthy is the vital cog in the wheel at the Mid State Shearing Museum, welcoming visitors and overseeing the upkeep of the display. He also gives his time with Meals on Wheels and the Nyngan Golf Club.
All four nominees were recognised with gifts at the Seniors week morning tea.
Other Seniors week celebrations included a combined church service, hosted by Father Paul at St Patricks Church, and followed by a morning tea in the McKillop Hall. The stage three students at St Josephs School played a part in the Mass celebrating their elders, and later singing to them at the morning tea.
Popular Nyngan performer Royden Donoghue put on a concert in the grounds of the Mick Glennie Hostel for all members of the community.
Wednesday hosted a bingo afternoon at the Nyngan RSL club, and on Friday residents were treated to an open day at the Nyngan Museum.
