Prick up your ears, Middle Kingdom. After its noisy domestic opening last weekend, and a very encouraging $21M offshore debut in just half of its international box office footprint, A Quiet Place has secured a theatrical release in China. The John Krasinski-helmed horror thriller will go out on May 18 in mainland cinemas, Deadline understands.
Horror films are not typical fare for the Middle Kingdom, so this is a notable get for Paramount and Platinum Dunes. The latters Michael Bay is a big draw in the market via the Transformers franchise, however. The most recent film in the genre to score a China release was Universal/Blumhouses Happy Death Day.
A Quiet Place surprised in its North American debut this past weekend, bowing to $50M and knocking Steven Spielbergs Ready Player One off its top perch. Overseas, its weekend gross in like-for-like markets was 79% above the debut of Get Out, 70% ahead of Dont Breathe and on par with Split.
Horror fans in Latin America gave the Krasinski/Emily Blunt-starrer strong starts while the UK was the biggest dollar debut at $3.6M. The offshore bow was a terrific start for the story of a family forced to live in silence while hiding from creatures that hunt by sound.
There are many majors to come, including Russia, Korea, Germany, France and Spain throughout April and into the summer, now along with China.
