Shining for a star

The Western Plains womens Sevens team were hard at work on Sunday morning, learning skills and playing alongside Australian womens rugby Sevens player Mahalia Murphy.

The team were lucky enough to have the rugby star come to Nyngan to run training for the girls.

Ms Murphy was at Larkin Oval with a number of the women from the team, joining in and teaching them a few techniques in passing, tackling and kicking.

“[Ive] just been teaching them some basic skills and some basic plays and just some technical points about the game,” Ms Murphy said.

When asked how the girls are going Ms Murphy said “really good”.

“Theyre picking up really well, I'm surprised not long ago they were sitting here and I asked who can kick and none of them could … I gave them two tips really and they were kicking like there is no tomorrow.

“I think they surprised themselves and it gave them a bit of confidence so theyre actually picking up really well and yeah theyre going well,” she said.

Ms Murphy believes if the team continue to get together and keep working hard that anything is possible.

“Theres definitely potential in the team, I just think that if they keep turning up to training and use it, and just try to better themselves then they can possibly wear the green and gold jersey too.”

The girls have been working hard

“Hopefully we can strengthen the rugby clubs up here and … help them be seen as well.”

“I think thats it, their commitment to this training is a first step really i hope it all goes best.”

The team, consisting of girls from Nyngan, Bourke, Trangie and Warren, will continue to train for the 2018 Country Rugby Union Championships in Warren on April 28-29.
