Skategirl will hold their first Have A Go Girls and Womens Skateboarding event this Saturday March 31 at Busselton Skatepark.

The brainchild of Margaret River Skate School owner Ness Moore, the event will give girls and women easy access to the world of skating.

“Skategirl will be running workshops around the South West. The first being our Busselton event on Easter Saturday,” said Moore.

“Were encouraging self esteem, resilience and perseverance amongst women and girls. Its a great way for parents to connect with their kids, it is certainly not a sport just for youngsters.

“Of course there is also the fitness factor – skateboarding is exceptional for strengthening your core through balance and is a really fun way to get moving.”

“After I had kids, it became easier to go to the skatepark than the beach, because I could pop my youngest in the skate bowl and know he was safe instead of worrying about the water.”

Ms Moore said the sport also taught skaters to be tough and resilient in life.

“You really need to be able to take a fall, pick yourself up and get back into it, and it doesnt take long for you to realise that you are capable of getting a bruise or two and getting right back up again,” she said.

Moore said the success of local skaters at Busseltons 2018 King of Concrete event on the weekend showed the amount of talent and promise in the South West skating scene.

Margaret River Skate School coach and MRSHS student Tomo Baker (16) won the Under 16s division at the event, while fellow MRSHS student Zeyke Cooke (13) took second place.

Zeykes older brother Sunny Cooke (16) collected third place in the open mens division.

Moores 9 year old daughter Armani came third in the open womens division, and is now classed as WAs third best bowl rider, while son Rollins Moore (10) took out the Under 12s division.

“He is now the WA Bowl Riding Champion Under 12, and he skated with so much style and finesse.

“It was an amazing turn out and results for our Margaret River skaters,” said Ness Moore.

“We should be able to create more champions in the coming years with our new skate park.

“We are so excited for the opening of the new park and were very much hoping to be able to continue our training once it is ready to go.”

The Skategirl Girls & Women Skateboarding Have A Go Day is on this Saturday March 31 from 11am at the Busselton Skate Park. All ages and skill levels are welcome. More information can be found at www.skategirl.com.au or just turn up on the day.
