Actor Anton Yelchin’s Family Settles Wrongful Death Suit Against Fiat Chrysler

Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin’s parents have settled their lawsuit against the makers of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV that crushed and killed their son in 2016.

Terms were not disclosed on the settlement, which was filed this week in Los Angeles Superior Court. There are reports that the settlement will go to the Anton Yelchin Foundation and to the filming of a documentary on the young actor’s life.

Victor and Irina Yelchin sued Fiat Chrysler because the Cherokee model was among 1.1 million vehicles the company recalled two months before Yelchin’s death. The vehicle’s gear shifters were a problem for drivers, often causing the Cherokees to roll away unexpectedly.

The wrongful death and product liability lawsuit alleged that those gear selectors were the cause of the actor’s death. The 27-year-old actor was killed when his 2015 Cherokee rolled backward down a driveway of his Los Angeles home, pinning him between a mailbox and a security fence.

Fiat Chrysler said that it is “pleased that we’ve reached an amicable resolution in this matter” in a statement. It added that the company continues to “extend our deepest sympathies to the Yelchin family for their tragic loss.”

Anton Yelchin was best known for his role as Pavel Chekov in the latest version of the Star Trek movie franchise, but had dozens of film and television credits. The actor’s final film, Thoroughbreds, hit theaters earlier this month.
