The annual Salmon run is on its way, with some small schools of fish already making their presence known in the Cape to Cape area.

Better numbers of fish should start showing up in the next couple of weeks, so keep your eyes peeled when heading to the beach.

Early signs point towards a good chance of another bumper season with the waters off the Capes having cooled off a little in the last couple of weeks.

Larger sized schools have been spotted heading this way along the south coast, so it won’t be long now.

We will be fully stocked up with salmon lures and as in previous years we will be running a promotion on Richter Lures.

Spend $20 on any salmon lures by Richter and you’ll go into a draw to win a Richter prize pack worth $200.

The Salmon Sport Fish Weekender fishing competition at Hamelin Bay is coming up early next month, being held on the weekend of April 7-8.

Organised by the Average Angler Fishing Adventures, there is over $6000 in prizes to be won in a number of categories.

While the competition is based at Hamelin Bay, entrants can fish anywhere between Augusta and Busselton.

Entry is $25 for adults and $15 for those under 16.

The fishing scene offshore has been producing the goods for many boaties.

There have been some big pinkies caught, in quite shallow water and there have been plenty of average sized Dhuies and some monstrous Nannygais too.

A variety of methods have been working, bait being a reliable option, with jigs and soft plastics accounting for their fair share.

There have been good numbers of Southern Bluefin Tuna offshore, including some around the 8-10 kilogram mark.

Trolling around skirted lures when travelling between your demersal spots could give you the chance of getting into a few.

Reports of Spanish Mackerel have slowed right down, though the odd fish has been crashing lures meant for tuna, so it could be worth running a wire trace just in case.

There have been some Kingfish turning up on reefs offshore from Prevelly and shore fisherman have reported catches of some nice Mulloway along the coastline.

They have also been picking up some decent Tailor as well and small Bronze Whalers have also been in the mix.

Bread and butter fishing for Herring, Whiting and Skippy has been a reliable option and there have been some squid caught in calmer areas during breaks in the swell.

Those crayfishing have reported a slowdown in the numbers they have been getting, however the average size has been substantial. Divers appear to have been getting the better hauls.
