An adventure in science

The Bogan Shire Early Learning Centre (ELC) last week hosted a nationally acclaimed “Adventures in Science” seminar and workshop presented by special guest Dr Camilla Gordon.

Bogan Shire ELC invited the community into the centre to learn and be inspired by Dr Gordon’s presentation.

The session centred on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) in early childhood.

She took participants on a journey of discovery about the science that is all around us in everyday life and how children discover this, during the second stage of her presentation Camilla displayed various experiences that can bring STEM education to life and engage children in learning.

In attendance were parents, students and teaching staff from the ELC, Bogan Bush Mobile, St Joseph’s School, Nyngan Public School and the Nyngan Preschool – all keen to advance their understanding on this innovative topic.

Students actively learning.

Dr Gordon was overwhelmed with the support of the evening and expressed how positive this response was from the community.

“Getting involved in learning and teaching STEM in early childhood is critical in supporting the development and education of children in our society and it starts with engaging educators, teachers and parents,” said Dr Gordon.

“It’s all new so it’s vitally important to teach it in this way, even university graduates will not be competent in this area because it’s new and technology is moving ever faster,” she said.

Bogan Shire ELC and Bogan Bush Mobile children were lucky to have Dr Camilla work with them sharing some of her wonderful resources and ideas with the children and educators.

Bogan Shire Children’s Services are actively working to develop effective, collaborative relationships with all schools in our community to ensure the best outcomes for children in the Bogan Shire and are excited about working further with Dr Gordon and implementing STEM experiences and learning with our children aged 0-12 years within our educational program.

Focused on STEM.
