Movie fans are furious with Amy Schumer and her new movie I Feel Pretty.
The premise of the movie sees Amy’s character Renee struggling with self-esteem issues as she perceives herself to be ugly. But during a spin class she falls off the bike and gives herself a nasty head injury, which makes her believe she’s the most beautiful woman to walk the planet.
But instead of viewers finding the positive message that beauty is in confidence and not looks, they’re finding it ‘mean’, ‘problematic’, ‘destructive’ and that it made one ‘vomit in their mouth’ as Renee appears to humiliate herself in her actions following her accident.
One cinema goer wrote on Twitter: ‘The new Amy Schumer movie I Feel Pretty is such a s**t show. She thinks she’s ugly and needs to hit her head and get brain damage to think she’s pretty to develop the confidence needed to succeed??
‘This is so problematic in so many in so many ways I wanna die.’
The issue is also that Renee has to suffer a brain injury to consider herself beautiful.
Another added: ‘I just read the plot for I Feel Pretty and I just vomited in my mouth. It takes a head injury for someone to think their beautiful? And have confidence? Seriously??
‘Playing pretty/ugly girl card is revolting and destructive. Putting girls against girls. F**k that s**t.’
The fury came thick and fast on Twitter, with streams of tweets angry at the message behind the movie:

The trailer also got hit hard in the reviews, with one published by the Independent branding the movie ‘insulting to anyone her size or larger.’
However, Amy Schumer fans were quick to leap to her defense, saying the backlash is due to a misinterpretation of the movie.
One wrote: ‘The trailer for #IFeelPretty isn’t anti feminist at all! She doesn’t change her self to feel beautiful it’s the way she sees herself that changes and confidence comes with that, it’s a pretty good message tbh so Sophie Hagen can stfu!.’

I find it unfortunate that you have so many well-formed opinions about a movie you haven't seen yet. Also, Amy is one of the few women shaping her career as one who can carry a movie without a male lead. Maybe we should let her tell some stories before dragging her. #IFeelPretty

I Feel Pretty is released in cinemas in June.
