Singer Dennis Edwards has died one day before his 75th birthday.
The former lead singer of The Temptations passed away in hospital following complications with meningitis, his family confirmed to CBS Chicago.
Dennis reportedly passed away in Chicago while going through rehabilitation after suffering from an aneurysm.
He joined The Temptations in 1968, replacing David Ruffin, and delivered such hits as Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone and I Can’t Get Next To You.

His nephew, Jason Quebec, paid tribute to him online, writing: ‘My uncle Dennis Edwards passed away this morning. Please keep my family in prayer.’
‘You were truly a class act, Dennis. I will miss you more than words can describe. It’s been a privilege to have been in your presence.’
Dennis auditioned for Detroit’s Motown Records in 1966 where he was signed but placed on a retainer, until he achieved his big break when he joined The Contours after their lead singer was struck with illness.
The Contours served as the opening act for The Temptations on multiple occasions, with band members Eddie Kendricks and Otis Williams recruiting him as their lead singer after being impressed.
Dennis also attempted a solo career, having a hit with 1984’s Don’t Look Any Further.
