Why is Jessie J a contestant on a Chinese talent show?
Jessie J is no stranger to talent shows as she featured on the ITV hit programme The Voice UK as a judge for the first two series.
She’s clearly made her mark on the music scene, with her tracks Price Tag and Domino winning her numerous awards including BRITs and MOBOs.
So it feels slightly strange to watch the tables turn as the established singer tries to prove herself as a contestant on the Chinese talent show, Singer.
The show is a re-branded version of I Am a Singer and allows pop stars to compete with each other – kind of like the X Factor, except the contestants are already famous.
In the last episode Jessie J went up against Taiwanese singers Sam Lee and Angela Chang, and Chinese rocker Wang Feng on the Hunan TV programme.
This time round she had to chose a song to sing that wasn’t her own (weird, we know), and of course she went for the classic Whitney Houston song that everyone sings when they enter these talent shows: I Have Nothing.
Shock horror.
Anyway, before she took to the stage she got to explain why she chose this particular song.
Well, you know how every contestant needs a sob story? This was her time to shine as she opened up about being in the same hotel as Whitney when she died.
She said: ‘Whitney Houston is someone I look up to.
‘Unfortunately I was in the same hotel when she passed, and I want the Chinese audience and everyone else who is going to see it around the world to know, one how much I love Whitney Houston and two, to see how hard I push myself vocally.
‘I want to celebrate her.’
She added: ‘Taking on a Whitney song you never know what’s going to happen. So I think I’m nervous about hitting all of the notes.’
At the end of the programme we got to find out who had won that round…
*Spoiler Alert*
Of course it was our girl Jessie J, the programme’s first-ever Anglo-American contestant (she has won all of those BRITs and MOBOs so we’d be surprised if she didn’t win).
With all of this success in China, we can’t help but wonder why she hasn’t said anything about it on her social media accounts, or why she went on the competition in the first place.

The move comes after the 29-year-old admitted she wanted to get back to singing rather than mentoring others, so maybe this is the reason for it – but she is just about to release her fourth studio album R.O.S.E, so it’s not like there is a lack of singing in her life.
Honestly, the whole thing completely baffles us as much as it does you. But if the girl is happy, that’s all that matters right?
