It was a feud that dominated Carla Connor’s storylines during her last, somewhat exhausting to watch stint but Coronation Street star Kate Ford has confirmed that the soap does not plan to revisit the Tracy Barlow battles that Carla was constantly up against – aside from the odd catty comment here or there.
Producer Kate Oates had previously assured viewers that they would have different material for Alison King’s character this year and although there is inevitable tension between Carla and Tracy when they come face to face, both characters will be involved in their own separate strands.
While Carla returns with a secret and is tasked with saving Underworld, Tracy is getting to grips with Steve McDonald as the pair enjoy some festive passion.
Discussing Carla’s return, Kate told Metro.co.uk: ‘I did a scene this morning with Ali and it just felt so bizarre. Tracy’s kind of moved on a little bit from that. It was Tracy and Carla sniping at each other and it did feel quite weird actually.
‘They’re never going to be best mates, but that’s not going to be the main focus of Carla’s return. We’re not going back there. For me, I really enjoy where the character’s at right now.
‘She was going a little bit too pantomime in the way she was always being the bitch. Now, I get to play other parts of her and it’s easier for me.’
One thing she enjoys specifically is her alter ego’s friendship with Mary Taylor. Kate enthused: ‘I love those scenes with Mary. And I love working with Patti as well.
‘Their characters are so different, but I imagine that Tracy used to bully the Mary type at school. And Mary would have wanted to be in Tracy’s gang. And all of a sudden they realise that they actually really quite like each other and they’re really great friends now.’
With a friendship, a romance and a family, could things finally be working out for Tracy after everything?
