Cain Dingle is about to wade into a dangerous situation once again in Emmerdale as he sets out to defend Matty Barton, who has been attacked by an ex in a transphobic attack. But when memories of dead Joe Tate resurface, Cains blood turns cold and he ends up at the mercy of the gang he has confronted – with dire consequences.

Matty is mocked and ridiculed by Isaac and his friends and things then get sinister when they attack him and rip off his top to mock his body publicly. Matty feels destroyed and seeks refuge in doing some training – but Cain can tell something is up and decides to take action.

He finds Isaac and his mates and angrily confronts them, triggering a nasty fight between them all. But when memories of what he did to Joe suddenly come to the forefront of his mind, Cain freezes and ends up on the receiving end of a beating which leaves him badly injured.

But as Victoria encourages Matty to involve the police, Cain fears that he will buckle under interrogation and give away too much over Joes fate. Is the truth about to come out?

Jeff Hordley told Metro.co.uk: Its really affected him, he feels hes ruined his daughters life and it weighs heavy on him that he thinks hes killed someone, Moira has been a rock for him. Cain wants to instinctively help out after what happens to Matty so he finds out Isaacs local pub, confronts him and as he goes to punch him, he cant because hes taken back to what he did to Joe. It totally throws him, he reels, backtracks and says just stay away. This guy sees a chink in Cains armour, gets his pals, they surround him and kick the shit out of him.

Hes traumatised by Joe, its PTSD and he cant do anything about it. Its horrific, hes battered, bruised – they all jump on him like animals.

It remains to be seen whether Cain can hold it together when PC Swirling arrives to question him over what happened but Jeff admitted that he has enjoyed playing a more vulnerable side to the hard man.

He shared: I enjoyed exploring new avenues for the character. Hes been emasculated before but this particular time with it being Debbie, she is the one constant in his life. He feels he could lose her forever. Theres a lot going on. He doesnt feel like himself any more.
