EastEnders star Shona McGarty has promised Metro.co.uk that the feisty side of her character Whitney Dean is set to come back to the forefront in coming weeks after a year of misery left the character almost a shell of herself.

Since the breakdown of her marriage to Lee Carter and her dramatic fallings out with Linda over confused feelings for Mick, Whitney has been trying to get back on her feet – especially after Shirley sacked her from the Queen Vic.

But now that her sister Tiffany Butcher is back on the scene, mother hen Whitney is in full protective mode as she has someone to look out for – and as we recently witnessed in her stand off with irresponsible TJ, her edge is coming back and Shona told us that she couldn’t be happier.

We were speaking to her on the red carpet of the National Television Awards and she also hinted that Tiffany would keep her character busy. And, while she wasn’t giving much away about what the future holds, she also assured us of a big year ahead in the soap.

Her co-star Danny Walters picked up Best Newcomer while Lucy Fallon was handed the Best Serial Performance prize. Meanwhile, Emmerdale was crowned Best Serial Drama for the second year running.
