Ed Sheeran wants all-male remake of Lady Marmalade and the internet says hell no

With worldwide sales of over 130 million records, four Grammys and five UK number ones, it seems Ed Sheeran can do no wrong.

Or it seemed he couldnt, until he suggested tampering with one of the best female-fronted bangers of all time.

Ed has revealed he wanted to remake Lady Marmalade with Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars, and the internet has responded with a resounding hell no.

The 28-year-old has announced his upcoming No 6 Collaborations Project, featuring collabs with a host of mystery stars, and he told Charlamagne Tha God that the idea for the record had been the 2001 Grammy award winning bop that was Lady Marmalade, by Christina Aguilera, Pink, Mya and Lil Kim.

Ed said: This project actually started with one idea I had which was – you remember Lady Marmalade right? This is such a silly idea – I had an idea of doing that, like you could get Bruno, Bieber and me on a record, how fun would that be?

The first person I rung was Bruno and he was just like “lets just do a song together, just us” and thats how it happened – so then I did a song with Bruno and I did a song with Bieber and these individual songs started happening and then it turned into a project…It was a really good experience putting the record together.

Now, the Lady Marmalade all male reboot didnt happen, but Ed thinking it would be fun really struck a nerve online.

So yeah, maybe hold off on that idea, Ed.

Lady Marmalade was first recorded by Labelle in 1974, with All Saints going on to cover it in 1998.

But it was Christinas vocal runs and Lil Kims rap in the 2001 version for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack that will forever have a place in our hearts.

The song spent nine weeks at the top of the Billboard charts and won the 2002 Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration.

Its so sacred to many music fans that Rita Oras suggestion that she and three new female popstars cover it went down like a lead balloon back in 2015.

She told The Sun: Its always been by goal to create another Lady Marmalade. Im trying to round up the troops – I think it would me, Miley, Charlie XCX – shed be fun – and Iggy.
