Police are urging motorists to drive safely this Easter long weekend, to ensure everyone enjoys the holiday period. Double demerit points will be in place from midnight Thursday, April 18 and will continue until Monday, April 22 with additional police tasked to monitor the highway for speed and alcohol related offences. Nyngan Police Sergeant Tony Wood said safety should be the utmost priority for everyone travelling over the holiday period. "It's the long weekend and people travel long distances in order to have a break away or to spend time with family." "County roads can be dangerous, fatigue is dangerous, high speeds are dangerous and wildlife is dangerous. "That's why we want people to take their time, plan their trip and manage their fatigue." "We have had a couple of serious and fatal accidents crashes in the Bogan shire in the last 12 months and it's obviously devastating to the families and the communities." "So that's our ultimate goal we don't want to arrest people for drink driving, we don't want to give out tickets for speeding, we want people to arrive home safely so we can all go home at the end of the day."
