Shazam! Grows To $164M Overseas; After Has Intense Awakening – International Box Office
Refresh for latest…: A varied offering of holdover titles and a handful of new entries in staggered release, the international box office this weekend was led for the second frame in a row by Warner Bros/New Line/DCs Shazam!. The family-friendly superhero added $35.9M in the sophomore session and has now grossed $163.9M overseas for a running worldwide total of $258.8M. Disneys Dumbo is also still flying around, rising to $177M offshore and $266.9M global in the 3rd frame.
Among the freshman films, Voltages teen drama After had a notable awakening in some key European markets. Early estimates on the adaptation of Anna Todds YA novel are $12.28M from 28 markets. That includes No. 1 starts in such hubs as Italy and Germany which were also major plays for the Fifty Shades movies. Hellboys overseas debut figures have not come in from Millennium, although comScore estimates have it at about $10.1M from 40 markets. We will update accordingly.
Elsewhere, Fox 2000s faith-based drama Breakthrough eased into international play ahead of domestic, debuting to $2.18M in 14 markets. The only major to release was Brazil which leads with $1.45M at 112% above Miracles From Heaven and nicely setting up a run through the Easter holiday on the Chrissy Metz-starrer.
Also new is Universals Little, which bowed to $1.9M from 11 markets led by the UKs $751K at 370 locations. The thrifty female-fronted and directed comedy continues rollout through the summer counterprogramming months.
In holdover highlights, Fox and New Regencys Bohemian Rhapsody crossed the $900M mark worldwide. Paramounts Pet Sematary dug up another $12.6M for a $35.7M cume to date; the studios Wonder Park opened in a further 26 markets to lift the offshore tally to $30.3M ahead of the China debut on Friday. And, Universals Us has now out-grossed the lifetime of Jordan Peeles Get Out in 51 overseas markets.
Breakdowns on the films above and more are being updated below.

AFTER
Voltages Jenny Gage-directed adaptation of Anna Todds bestselling YA novels, which started out on the fan-fiction website Wattpad, discovered an estimated $12.28M in 28 markets this weekend. The $14M teen romance drama caused swooning in Italy (via Leone) and Germany (via Constantin) where it was the No. 1 title. Its notable that After has been compared to the Fifty Shades series whose three pics counted both Italy and Germany as lead markets. After is expected to continue to play there with steady and rising figures throughout the weekend. There were further No. 1s in Portugal, Greece, Israel and Poland. Conversely, there was some front-loading in Denmark and Spain (the latter with terrific weather this weekend). But coming on line next weekend are France and Belgium where previews have erupted.
The tale of first love hails from Todds series of five books that have been read more than 1.5B times on Wattpad. Simon & Schuster imprint Gallery Books has published four titles in the series that are now available in 40 countries.
Talent did a major offshore push with Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Josephine Langford and Todd traveling extensively including stops in Mexico City, São Paulo, Madrid, Lisbon, Milan, Rome, Paris and Toronto. There were big fan events, book signings, premieres, Q&As and photo calls in each market. Todd has a highly-engaged fanbase that turned out in the thousands at public appearances and helped boost social with the global #aftermovie hashtag.
