Episode three of the latest season of Luther gave us a blast from the past as Mark North (played by Paul McGann) resurfaced to offer Luther shelter from the dangerous gangster George Cornelius.

Youd certainly be forgiven for needing a reminder about Mark North, since his last appearance on the show was way back in 2010.

Who is Luthers Mark North?
Mark Norths background on this show is not a happy one.
We first met Mark when he was introduced as the new love interest of Luthers estranged wife, Zoe, so the boys didnt exactly hit it off.
This animosity was only made worse when Alice, Luthers friend and fan-favorite malignant narcissist, hired a gang of girls to attack Mark. Her aim was to make him appear weak and therefore push Zoe and Luther back together.
However misguided this plan was, a happily ever after apparently wasnt on the cards for Zoe and Mark.

Towards the end of the season, she was shot dead by Luthers friend and fellow cop Ian Reed. This resulted in an alliance between Luther, Alice and Mark to get revenge on Reed and clear Luther of the crime.
Now, Marks back on the scene as Luther uses his home to hide himself and Alice away from a violent gangster who seeks to do them both harm.

What else has Paul McGann appeared in?
Paul McGann has reprised his role as Mark North, but thats probably not the only thing you know him from.
Possibly his most memorable role was that of The Eighth Doctor in Doctor Who: The Movie in 1997. He also appeared as Doctor Who more recently in a mini-episode,The Night of the Doctor, in the lead up to the 50th anniversary special in 2013.
He also starred as Marwood in Withnail & I in 1987. Even though it wasnt hugely successful on its release, over time its developed into a beloved cult classic. Time Out even ranked it 15th in their definitive list of the 100 best British films.
Lately youd have been able to spot McGann as John Gaskell, a gifted neurosurgeon on Holby City. His last appearance on the show was in an episode called One of Us in November 2018.
