Pregnant virgin speaks out about using a sperm donor to conceive her child
A pregnant virgin says her decision to conceive her first child using a sperm donor is ‘giving the middle finger’ to people who told her she could not do it before marriage.
Lauren, 29, comes from a strictly religious mennonite community in Canada and suffers from a gland disorder that affects her body’s hormones and caused her to go through puberty at a much later stage than any of her friends.
Mum delivered her own baby when her waters broke on the way to hospital
She has hypopituitarism, which means her pituitary gland is not formed properly and has affected her throughout her life.
Going against advice from her doctors and friends, Lauren decided to conceive using a sperm donor and is now expecting a baby which is due in June.
She says that she is looking forward to becoming a virgin mother and hopes that her baby will be the ticket out of the dating scene which she finds hard to deal with.
Lauren told Vice: ‘I make jokes about it but basically this is me giving a middle finger to the people who told me I couldn’t do it because I’m not married yet. It’s the opposite of a religious reason. If you’re telling me I can’t do this, I’m going to do it anyway.’
Despite having a boyfriend when she was around 16, she says that she has never had the urge to have sex, and that she finds kissing ‘awkward’.
She has been on a few dates but it just wasn’t for her and she would prefer to be able to focus on herself.
Although Lauren has tried dating websites, she has been unable to find anyone right for her, and comments from some men online have left her shocked and disgusted.
But the process has not been plain sailing for her, as a common side affect of her condition is reduced fertility.
She said: ‘The hardest thing was probably getting pregnant. Initially my endocrinologist said it won’t happen, that I’ll need to get an egg donor and spend tens of thousands of dollars on IVF. I felt really shut down.’

But everything changed for her after a five minute appointment with a fertility expert.
Since becoming pregnant, Lauren says that there have been times when she has thought about having sex with someone just to see what it would be like.
