Winter Olympics 2018: Britt Cox, Matt Graham eye big start at Pyeongchang games

One is the queen of moguls, while the other has designs on dethroning the king.

Britt Cox and Matt Graham have the opportunity to start Australia's Winter Olympics campaign with a bang when qualifying for the event starts at Pyeongchang's Bokwang Phoenix Park on Friday.

While many of their teammates prepare to take part in or watch the opening ceremony that day, the duo will be looking to lay down runs that give them a shot at medals.

Cox, who had an outstanding 2016-17 with seven wins and a world championship, will go into the event as one of the favourites.

But the three-time Olympian is likely to be a little wary after a season that's included four finishes off the podium among her two victories.

"At the moment anyone within the top 10 is capable of putting down the best run of the night," she said.

Graham, who was seventh in Sochi but has been a regular World Cup placegetter since, will likely have to beat the sport's greatest practitioner in Canadian Mikael Kingsbury, if he is to top the podium.

"Mikael is an exceptional athlete. He is ultra consistent and that's what makes him so great. He is able to put runs down day in, day out that are really high quality," Graham said.

"A bad run for him is second or third place, which not many people can really say.

"But for us he is beatable. I know I can beat him and a bunch of other guys can beat him."

Recent history shows that is easier said than done.

While Graham enjoyed a win over the Quebecois on home turf at Perisher during the Australian championships of 2017, he, like most of the rest of the competitors, have largely been skiing in Kingsbury's wake.

He took out the first six events of this season before a rare second in the last World Cup event. Until that point the six-time overall World Cup winner had won 13 consecutive competitions.

Graham will be also be joined in the men's competition by another World Cup winning medallist for Australia, Brodie Summers.

Summers may struggle to be at his best though after tearing his ACL in September.

Joining that trio are Jakara Anthony, Rohan Chapman-Davies, James Matheson, Madii Himbury and Claudia Gueli.

The women's moguls final is on Sunday and the men's decider is on Monday.
