Black Widow: Yelena’s vest is making fans feel so many emotions

news– It’s not unusual for Marvel to lay in easter eggs in its movies and TV shows.

Keen-eyed fans love picking out small details to tie back into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe or even the comic books from which it was born.

And there’s one detail in the Black Widow movie, which was released this past weekend in cinemas and on Disney+, that has fans particularly excited, but also emotional.

In the film, Florence Pugh’s character Yelena Belova is chuffed at a multi-pocketed utility vest she’s wearing, declaring it the first item of clothing she’s ever bought for herself after spending her whole life as part of an assassin program.

At the end of the film, after she has rebonded with her “sister” Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), she gave the vest to Nat as a gesture of their relationship. Nat is then wearing this vest in the final pre-credits scene of Black Widow.

If that’s all that it was, it would be a nice moment between two women who have been apart for two decades after spending two years of their childhood together as a Russian sleeper cell network posing as an all-American family.

But it wasn’t just that. The vest is the same vest that Natasha wore throughout 2018 movie Avengers: Infinity War, a movie that takes in the MCU timeline after Black Widow, even though it was released three years earlier.

Which means that Nat rocked the vest her sister gave her as she fought alongside Steve Rogers against Thanos. It’s a retcon of a piece of costume that previously had no particular significance, but which now represents the love Nat had for her other family.

It’s more poignant because the character sacrificed herself in Avengers: Endgame, which marked the end of Nat’s journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – in theory, anyway, because with comic book stories, you never know.

When fans made the connection after the release of Black Widow, it’s fair to say they were feeling many emotions.
